GoTrekkers digital map DVD for Baja, Mexico

Great news for Baja travelers: GoTrekkers has released a new DVD mapping product for Windows OS that includes seamless topos for Baja, Mexico at 1:50K, 1:250K, and 1:1000000 scales. The map set also includes color Landsat imagery.

If you are familiar with the famous Baja Almanac paper topo map booklet and use it for getting around Baja, then you will appreciate the ability to use the more detailed topo scale of 1:50K, especially when you can see your GPS position and track information in real-time. The maps are run using the Memory Map software included on the DVD. You can place waypoints and trip information on the map to help with navigation and keep all your notes and information organized.

I reviewed the Memory Map software (see Going Paperless in the Summer 2010 issue of Overland Journal) and found it to be very effective as a mapping and navigation tool for real-time use with a GPS and computer. GoTrekkers offers digital mapping products for use with Memory Map that span the entire globe.

The cost of this software package is $75, which I find to be an exceptional value. The only other way that I know to achieve this moving topo map capability for Baja (other than LB's vector maps on a brand-name GPS like Garmin or Lowrance) would require Ozi Explorer software ($99) and digital topo maps from INEGI, Mexico's census and geography agency ($125), though that still wouldn't get you the Landsat imagery.

I'm including some images of screen-captures below to provide examples of the map detail at various zoom levels. You'll note that these captures were made in GoTrekker's office, so no GPS position marker or track is shown.

This version of the software also works on the HEMA Navigator 5 GPS unit. GoTrekkers is also working on a version for Apple's iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch and expects to release it sometime this year.
