Bare Essentials

This list is to serve as a minimum recommended equipment guide for a typical overland adventure. Camping equipment is not included. No consideration has been made for special vehicle requirements or weather conditions.


PERSONAL

  • Water (One gallon of water per day, per person plus reserve - weather will dictate)
  • Solar protection (Hat, sunglasses and sunscreen)
  • Appropriate travel clothing (Breathable and weighted to the conditions)
  • Windproof and waterproof jacket (Regardless of conditions)
  • Sleeping bag (One per occupant, appropriate to the conditions)
  • Change of clothes
  • Change of socks and shoes
  • Gloves (One pair per occupant)
  • Hiking or trail shoes
  • Food (3,000 calories per day, per person, plus reserve)
  • Identification and copy of vehicle registration
  • Cash
  • Contact list
  • Signal mirror
  • Navigation resources (Map and compass minimum; GPS and local guidebooks recommended)
  • Flashlight
  • Whistle
  • First aid kit

    VEHICLE

    • Fire extinguisher
    • Front and rear recovery points
    • Shovel
    • Jumper cables
    • Drivetrain fluids
    • Recovery strap
    • Jack
    • Tarp
    • Tool kit appropriate to vehicle
    • Vehicle spares appropriate to vehicle
    • Full-size spare tire
    • Light truck or better tires
    • Spare key, hidden outside vehicle
